The Brussels are hangin in there
Have just been in the garden for 1/2 hr banging in some more bottles for the raised beds. They are coming along slowly... bottle by bottle... We need to drink more if I'm gonna have them finished before next spring.
Most of the garden is looking pretty dismal but the Brussels are hanging in there... Having been ravished by the caterpillars earlier in the year I didn't really think they were going to see it through but they still have their tops and little round florets are forming on the stem so I am cautiously hopeful that we will have homegrown Brussels for Christmas dinner.

The Last Harvest
Sunday 31st October... I have just harvested my last bits of veg for 2010 and I am still amazed at the joy it brings me to dig up my very own home grown potatoes, pull up fresh aromatic carrots and pick up the wind fall apples that haven't been too badly eaten by the birds and insects (only a few holes, I'll cut them out!). The potatoes were few but considering I didn't actually plant any potatoes this year a bonus (and as my partner has just said at least enough for one free meal). I know that you aren't supposed to grow veg from the remnants of the previous years crop but I cant see the harm. I got a great crop of tomatoes this year in the same way. Young plants kept cropping up all over the place and I just let them grow and stuck a cane or two in to support them. They tasted great!
I have decided to go the raised bed root next year so have been preparing my plot, banging in wine bottles...! I have a cunning plan to save the £100 it was going to cost to buy sleepers and use wine bottles instead as edging. So far so good but we need to drink some more wine so that I can get more bottles, shame that!
